Monday, 4 February 2013 – Sydney, Australia
This was Barbara's and my second one day visit to Sydney in three years and my 7th or 8th visit in 20 years. I love Sydney. Everyone loves Sydney. We had worked out plans to make the most of our short stay.
Those who got up early watched a beautiful antipodal sunrise. A bunch of folks were around the Observation Lounge as Silver Whisper passed through the heads into Sydney Harbour, said to be the largest deep water anchorage in the world. (Captain Cook called it, "An insignificant inlet, not worth exploring", and landed in very shallow Botany Bay. I guess you can't win 'em all.) The iconic view of the Coat Hanger bridge and Opera House is, uh, iconic. So are the ferries from Circular Quay.
We took the ship's shuttle bus from all too touristy Darling Harbour, now called something else by only map makers, and immediately bought all day bus, ferry, and train passes. We then took a bus to iconic Bondi Beach, a ferry around the harbor, walked around Chinatown and downtown, then a train back to Circular Quay to catch a ferry back to Darling Harbour (still called something or other else) back to reboard Silver Whisper to see if all our stuff was successfully transferred to our new suite. We had purchased an upgrade to a veranda for the last segment around Australia. We then met our new butler who answered each request with, "Consider it done." That can be interpreted many ways, but he did provide a life supply of toiletries when Barbara inquired about a specific brand of shampoo. See previous trip blogs for a discussion of butlers. Better still, don't.
